Recycling Discarded Fishing Line

Osceola County 4-H Council has identified discarded fishing line as a hazard for boaters and anglers. When the line is left in the water, it gets tangled in boat propellers resulting in expensive repair costs and days off the water. Birds, fish and otters get tangled in the line resulting in injury, starvation or death.

Youth in UF/IFAS 4-H clubs around the county have installed fishing line recycling bins at local boat ramps and marinas. The white pvc plastic bins make it convenient for anglers to dispose of plastic monofilament fishing line and plastic spools when fishing on our lakes. Consider saving line when respooling and dropping it in one of the bins.

Club members empty the bins periodically and return cleaned line and spools to UF/IFAS Osceola County Extension Office. When a box is full, the line is returned to Berkley, a major fishing tackle supplier, and the plastic is melted and refabricated into other products.

Help boaters and our aquatic animals by recycling fishing line. More..
